I am amazed at how long the battery lasts. How did I know it was time to replace it? Because the normally green lit keypad flashed red after I unlocked the door a few minutes ago.A red flash usually means I entered the wrong code. But why would it flash red after I entered the right code? I don't remember. Duh! The battery must be low. And indeed, replacing the 9-volt battery returned the lock to its normal behavior. This is the kind of intuitive design that makes it smart. Why does the battery last for years? Because the design of the lock is also very energy efficient. When you enter the correct code on the keypad the lock doesn't automatically open for you. That would require an energy consuming motor. Instead, the lock simply disengages so that you can manually open it yourself. This way your daily "man power" saves years worth of battery power and the hassle of frequently changing... The two knobs are not alike. I didn't realize this until I was completely frustrated when I tried to install the knob on the outside, and it kept slipping off, even though I thought I had engaged the spring-loaded mechanism that looks it in place. It turns out that one of the knobs has a longer shaft, and this one must be installed on the outside of the door. Other than this, installation was super easy. My 7-year-old helped me and was able to do most of it, with me clarifying the instructions. I just installed it today, but so far it works great. Programming is easy, and like others, I appreciate the thumb-turn on the inside that allows you to shut the door without locking it. We rent out our apartment as a guest rental, and it's great to be able to easily program new codes for each guest. |
