3.0 out of 5 stars OK if you do not plan on rekeying. Does not accept standard Schlage pins., April 13, 2015

I just wanted to confirm what another reviewer wrote about this product which is it cannot be rekeyed with Schlage pins. The cylinder is not a standard Schlage cylinder and cannot accept Schlage pins, especially the longer ones (#6, #9). I bought this to replaced a Pella sliding door handle lock. The fit of the overall lock was good. However, I wanted to rekey this to match the rest of the locks in my house and it would not accept the Schlage pins I had.

This product is fine if you are trying to use it as a lock replacement and do not plan on rekeying it.

I took away 2 stars because it says "Schlage keyway" when in reality if it was a standard Schlage keyway, it would have been able to be rekeyed with Schlage pins, which it cannot.

Description says it is for Schlage keys, but the pin holes are not deep enough to accept the longer Schlage pins, so cannot be keyed to fit most Schlage products. Also, the keys that came with these cylinders don't fit into genuine Schlage cylinders. I purchased a total of 4 of these from two different vendors and it is the same with all 4, so not an anomaly. I recommend that these not be purchased by any buyer.

This was not an easy rekey. Being a DIY kind of guy, and this being a simple mechanism I've successfully done a dozen times before on better made kits, I was not going to give up. Here's what I did to make it fit. Thought it might be helpful.
1) The keys provided are noticeably thinner than real Schlage keys. I had to take the cylinder and widen the slot ever so slightly with a ha,Mer and chisel. A couple taps, and I could insert a standard key. This was the biggest problem. It's marketed as a schlage style lock. Why would anyone buy a schlage lock like this If they weren't rekeying it...? And a regular schlage key will just NOT fit. At first I thought it was the wrong style. I successfully spread the cylinder enough. The standard key fits great now.
2) One pin in my set is a #8 standard pin. Found this out as I inserted the cylinder that the #8 was a hair too tall, and got caught, and all the top pins and springs flew out of the case as I was trying to push it... Read more

Product Description

This Schlage -shaped keyway and cylinder lock was designed to only aesthetically match actual Schlage keys and keyways, as it was designed specifically to be used in surface-mounted patio door handle sets. This cylinder lock is constructed of brass, it comes finished with a chrome face and features a hardened cut-away tailpiece. It works with vertical and 45 degree keyways (angle is determined when latch is extended to the locked position). *Tip: If keyed-alike cylinders are desired for more than one patio door handle set lock, kindly see Prime-Line’s model number E 2104. Note: The components of these cylinder locks are not compatible and cannot be rekeyed to match other Schlage locks, nor will Schlage keys fit into this cylinder lock.
