Door knobs. They're round, you turn them, pull or push and doors open. Simple stuff, right? But how do they look in the overall picture of your home design? If you're asking an architect to design a home around a modern water faucet you want brushed steel levers, european-style, probably. Renovating a turn of the century (1900) home, glass crystal maybe. Updating a 1970 "Brady" (you know, "Her's a story, about a lovely lady, who was raising three something something girls) home, you probably have those brass or chrome truncated cone style doorknobs. That's what we had, and as they've aged, we've replaced them with Schlage (do you say slay-juh, or Sh-log-uh? sowie die Deutsche? I keep thinking I'll call them and ask sometime). These have held up well through several dozen teenagers tramping through the house as visitors and players in my son's band during high school, so, as the older ones wear out,... They come with an adapter ring so you can replace Kuikset passage knobs that only last 40 years. I pounded one in out 45 year old doors and the door split. Perhaps newer doors have a sloppier hole for the latch, or are softer wood. In any case, once you've chiseled out one, for the square latch plate, the rest go pretty quickly. Cut enough out at first and you won't get frustrated refitting it again and again. PS Our 12 year old Schlage knobs are getting loose, the latches need regular dry lube. Schlage will replace them; they replaced a passage knob that my wife's rings made a mess of. Customer service says the new finish is even tougher. PPS Schlage service is still excellent; they sent me an entire replacement keyed set when the lock burst while I was rekeying it. I had ten to do and there was no reason for the one to burst. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By This review is from: Schlage F40PLY605 Plymouth Privacy Knob, Bright Brass (Tools & Home Improvement) I did a remodel a couple of years ago and did not install knobs until I found these to match the same ones I had in my house. Great Shipping and arrived as prommised. |
