It looks great and feels very sturdy. Setting the combination was no problem (even with a flimsy setting key), and it opened just fine when I was testing it before locking it onto anything. Snapped it onto the gate, and the first time I used it, it opened fine. The second time, it took a lot of fiddling. The third time... no go. I've had 3 different people try it on several occasions, and it just won't budge. Maybe it's from having been outside, but the number dials are harder to turn. Seems rather silly though, for a bit of rain to affect a lock that's likely to be used outside. So much for having an "easier" lock that didn't require searching for a key to open it. As soon as I can get it off the dang gate, I'm sending it back to Master. 29 of 29 people found the following review helpful By B (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews This review is from: Master Lock 178D Set-Your-Own Combination Padlock, Die-Cast, Black (Tools & Home Improvement) The lock seems sturdy enough, but the combination recognition isn't very accurate. For example, if I set my combination to 2-4-8-4, the lock will also accept 2-3-8-3 and 2-4-8-3. Regardless, I'm sure it would discourage casual petty theft as any person truly determined to get your stuff would probably just use a bolt cutter anyways. 17 of 17 people found the following review helpful By Gadget Fanatic (Irving, TX USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase This review is from: Master Lock 178D Set-Your-Own Combination Padlock, Die-Cast, Black (Tools & Home Improvement) We lock our front and back gates with these locks. They are in the elements, unprotected from sun/rain.The last ones (same model) were in service since 1994(!), and were good reliable easy to use locks. They were 'used' (unlocked/locked) several times a week. I decided to replace them because the numbers on the combination wheels were becomming a bit corroded and difficult to read, they were getting more difficult to turn (not that bad though), and the lock mecahnism wasn't working as well as it used to. Sometimes the lock didn't latch when locking, and you had to bang it on the gate to get it to latch. I tried lubricating the locks with triflow, which helped for a couple weeks, but then became stingy again. I thought that after 19 years, I could afford to buy a couple more. So I've been using the two replacements for a month now, and they're great. The numbers are easier to read, the wheels are easy to turn, and the lock mechanism works perfectly. I... Read more |
